Personal Finances

Students will learn the basics of finance and how the economy works, including free-market economy, banking, and microfinance. By the end of the workshop, students will have created their own budgeting plan based on their performance, age group, and preferences.

Injustices in the US

Students will learn about microaggression and go into a deep dive into racism. Students will explore injustices against multiple groups because of ethnicity/race/ religion/sexuality/etc. This workshop culminates with students researching the impacts of injustices against a certain group and creating any form of art displaying their findings.

Geography

Students will explore the five themes of geography across places around the world. Students will also learn to read maps and identify how cultures have traveled with people. The workshop concludes with students completing a project of their own incorporating the five themes of geography.

Mental Health

Students will explore the difference between mental health and mental illnesses. Students will also learn about the stigmas around mental health/illnesses, and how they can combat them. By the end of the workshop, students will understand to prioritize mental health, equally as their physical health, know where they can seek help, and engage in a project that allows them to reflect on their own mental health or present their findings on mental health.

US Government

Students will learn about the three branches of government and explore the separation of power through checks and balances. Students will also learn about the different political parties, different roles in government, and how elections work. Finally, students will create their own plan if they were president for four years, inspired by iCivics Win the White House Game and guidance from their instructor.

Writing

Students will be able to write and communicate more effectively. Students will work towards expressing ideas clearly, precisely, and authentically in creative, informative, and argumentative writing. Finally, students will complete a narrative to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
